Discover Mr. Shiz, The Urban Picasso
We all know Picasso’s amazing and unique creations. Now be mesmerized by this Urban Picasso innovative art form.
After graduating in 1997 from the George Sand Art College in France, Mr. Shiz worked various dead-end jobs in Paris and London before returning to his roots as an artist. He started by selling screen printed T-shirts and custom clothes at London’s Portobello market, but soon found himself losing his sense of creativity and inspiration. Seeing the airbrush skills of artists at a 2008 custom car show in Las Vegas gave him a newfound sense of purpose as an artist and he soon started creating graffiti works and murals.
But it’s the works of art he produces on the human body that really set The Urban Picasso apart from other urban artists. “After painting professionally for nearly a decade, it occurred to me that it was time to do what I wanted to do rather than what was expected of me,” Shiz said. “That’s what this show is all about.”
The images reflected on his body art prints are enhanced by unique head coverings known as “Shiz Heads” that obscure the faces of the models while adding another dimension to the art and emphasizing the theme.
“It’s the contrast that sums up what my work is all about, and there is definitely a contrast with hiding a pretty girl’s face instead of showing it,” Shiz said.
Shiz started developing his ability to paint and draw by sketching the statues and still life at museums and practicing graffiti letters at home each night. Although he describes his current work as pretty pictures with no meaning, Shiz admits that this is the first time he has felt a true connection to his work.
